AMG Policy Protects Project One From Car Scalpers
You needed an invite & $2.6 million to get one, but to get on the new AMG build slot will now cost you more than $5 million.
According to AutoBlog, Mercedes-AMG is putting in place a stop to those who plan on buying the new Project One hypercar for the purpose of flipping it for a profit. After a recent emergence of cars that are immediately appreciating in value several times over, AMG will have part of the ownership contract worded to avoid scalpers who want to bypass the privilege of owning the car and instead look at it with dollar signs.
Some may recall Ford’s battle with John Cena, after he tried to sell his Ford GT prematurely, but the sold-out Project One scalpers are already starting before delivery of the first car has been delivered. Simply selling a build slot is reportedly worth more than double of Mercedes asking price. To buy the car built with Formula 1 technology, you need to needed to have ponied up $2.6 million, but to get on the build slot will now cost you more than $5 million.
Exact wording of the contract isn’t revealed, but we can assume there’s a minimum length of ownership put in place. Not in writing is the risk of being black-listed by AMG if, and when, they come out with future hypercar projects. For anyone looking to make some quick cash, it’s a risky move that really isn’t worth taking.
Besides, if you’re one of the lucky 275 owners given the chance to drive this car, why not keep it? We’re sure there’s plenty of other ways to keep your Project One and still make money on it. Perhaps you can hold on to it for a decade as an investment. Or you could get in touch with friends in high places in showbiz, and rent it out for a movie prop. If you asked us what we’d do with a Project One, selling it would be the last thing on the list.
