Gorgeous 1990 G-Wagen underwent a serious transformation inside and out, from its base to its bow.

The Mercedes-Benz G-Class is the perfect vehicle for adventurous types — and this Wolf G-Wagen featured on  is no exception. The military model type has one of the most reliable engines ever made — a 2.5-liter five-cylinder diesel. Its manual transmission and rear lockable differentials are ideal for getting out of tough spots and navigating challenging terrain. Thus, the potential this old G-Wagen held made it a prime candidate for a restomod treatment.

History of the G-Wagen

Where exactly did this powerful workhorse come from, though?

Back in 1948, a former Mercedes engineer conceived an idea for an all-wheel-drive civilian vehicle suited for all types of terrain. He dubbed it the Universal Motor Gerat — or Unimog. Mercedes quickly bought the engineer’s company and began designing the first Unimog a year later. It wasn’t until 1973 that Mercedes made the first G-Wagon mock-up resembling today’s models. Even then, it featured all-wheel-drive, narrow width and a doubly menacing and civilized appearance.

The G-Wagen you see today first made its debut in 1979 in Austria where Mercedes made available three hand-built body styles. Yet, the rugged wagon didn’t officially make its way to the U.S. until 1993. Nearly a decade later, the company also began importing more civilized V8-powered versions of the G-Class to America. These more luxurious versions were popular among SUV drivers and those for a taste for high-tech comfort and safety.

Since then, thousands have sold despite their flashy price tag, and a few new models and styles have arrived. Yet, many still believe the 1990 Wolf reigns supreme.

A New Lease on Life

Legacy Overland recently finished restoring one of these Wolf G-Wagens. This 1990 model underwent a serious transformation inside and out, from its base to its bow. First, the aftermarket company rebuilt the engine and the mechanical indirect fuel pump. Then, they dedicated some time into rebuilding the main gearbox, transfer case and suspension. Additionally, the team galvanized all bolts, brackets, nuts and supports and added Bilstein shocks.

To make the G more suitable for everyday civilian life, Legacy Overland also added LED headlamps and taillights, front auxiliary lamps and white indicator front wing lamps. Paying homage to the G-Wagen’s military past, they decided to repaint the vehicle a boxwood green and attach a black bullbar and front wing lamp grille guards.

Legacy Overland made significant restorations to the Wolf’s interior as well. Brandy-colored leather covers the seats and black leather accents and cream stitching emphasize modernity. Custom leather dressed cup holder trays and black fiber floor mats complement the color scheme well. The instrument cluster and gauges were also rebuilt. Legacy Overland also added modern amenities like air conditioning and a Bluetooth sound system with sound insulation under the carpet.

Ready for Any Terrain

After all these restorations and upgrades, this green monster is ready to go wherever your adventurous spirit takes you. If you’re going to take it out to the beach, make sure you give it a good wash afterwards to prevent any corrosion or rust. Make sure you have the right tires, avoid the water, and watch out for the tides. Whether it be the sandy beaches of Florida or the rocky, mountainous terrain of the West, this classy, rugged vehicle is ready to tackle anything and everything mother nature throws at her.
