Get to Know the Mercedes-AMG E63 S in Just 3 Laps

“Don’t question why a family saloon needs 600 horsepower, because it does, frankly.” – Alex Goy, on the AMG E63 S

There aren’t many mid-sized four-door cars that are worth their salt on track, but it would seem that Mercedes has built a cracking good one. The E63 S AMG 4-Matic is an all-wheel-drive monster with the same 4-liter turbo V8 you’d find in the AMG GT. It still has most of the hustle of the GT, but this time you can bring along three of your friends (or your significant other and two children if you’re, you know, boring) instead of just one special friend. This car will haul four adults, all of their gear, and half a week of groceries. And it will probably set a new Nurburgring lap record in the process. We love it to bits.

The E63 S makes no sense in the light of day, but when you’re under its intoxicating spell you’ll defend it to the ends of the earth. Yes, of course, a sedan like this needs several hundred horsepower more than the average sedan. Of course, we want to take a giant black missile of a car with a drift mode button to a nice back road and switch-back endlessly up and down mountains until we run out of gas. It makes sense. It’s the only thing in the world that makes sense right now.

These days it seems like Mercedes AMG can do no wrong. A few years ago they were putting their giant 6.3-liter naturally aspirated V8 into every single model in the Mercedes lineup, and today that’s just been supplanted by the better, more powerful, more turbo-y 4-liter engine. We sure aren’t going to complain about that move. It’s a glorious powerplant that deserves heaps of praise, like it gets in the video above.
