Rare Mercedes-Benz C36 AMG Rips Through Canyons (Video)

“It’s a neat ’90s piece of AMG history,” says Matt Farah upon completion of a ‘One Take.’

We featured this exact 1995 C36 AMG here on MBWorld back in July. Back then, the car was owned by a friend of the site and for sale on Bring a Trailer. As it so happens, it was purchased by YouTube personality Tyler Hoover of Hoovie’s Garge. Hoover used the car as a way to get around during Monterey Car Week in August. He later drove it down the coast to Los Angeles for a meeting with The Smoking Tire’s Matt Farah to guest on the podcast and film this “One Take.” It isn’t a perfect car, but considering it has over 200,000 miles on the odometer, its $5,000 price tag made it a bargain.

From the outset, the automatic transmission proves it’s a decent choice for the canyons, as it’s more than happy to stick in one gear and keep it there. The large inline-6 AMG engine is sonorous and reminiscent of its contemporary competitor, the BMW E36 M3.

Even on a set of very low coilovers, this Benz rides nicely and soaks up bumps well, always keeping the tires in contact with the road. As C-Klasses go, this one is our favorite. Only a few hundred were made each year. Fewer still were imported to the US. If you can find one in this kind of shape, we suggest you buy it.

Considering that this was the first official collaboration between AMG and Mercedes, this is truly a piece of Merc history. And while we wish we’d bought the car instead of Hoover, we’re glad it’s gone to someone who will appreciate it, even if it isn’t perfect.
