Mercedes-AMG E 53 Coupe: Rightful Heir to the E-Class Throne?
Carfection goes through everything you need to know about the 2019 AMG E 53 coupe before it gets a thorough long-term test drive.
The 2019 Mercedes-AMG E 53 coupe is a definite departure from what we expect from AMG. We would normally associate AMG with a massive powertrain, and massive power. With huge engine displacement, advanced performance, and aggressive styling, AMG builds some of the most ferocious rides on the road and the track.
Now, we’re not saying that the 2019 AMG E 53 is lacking in any of its signature strength. It definitely has the goods. But the E 53 coupe is a welcome evolution for Mercedes. It has made some changes that make it easier to use as a daily driver. This is exactly what Henry Catchpole from Carfection will be using it for.
Catchpole has the very enviable task of driving the Mercedes-AMG E 53 4Matic+ as his daily driver for a long-term test drive. In this video, he finally has the car he’ll be driving, and is basically “unboxing” it, going through its features and specs.
“Mercedes, for reasons known only to themselves, has shied away from doing a 53 version of the E-Class coupe,” he points out. “Which is a bit odd. Why wouldn’t they build a rival to the BMW M6, or M8 which we know is coming soon?”
He goes through the cars dimensions, which measures about 191-inches long with a 113-inch wheelbase. And it looks stunning.
Of course the biggest change is under the hood. Gone is the V6, replaced with a 3.0 liter straight six, which is also is a hybrid. The low fuel consumption has a lot of appeal, but the turbocharged inline six is still roaring; making 429 horsepower, 384 lb.-ft of torque, and it is mated to a 9-speed gearbox.
The E 53 coupe starts at $73,000, but Catchpole has specced it out with with options. He opted for a rich metallic blue, which is just great looking. He also specced larger wheels, and added the Night Package. The Night Package has black finishes on the trim throughout, as well as the exhaust pipes. Sharp.
The interior is both sporty and luxurious. It is curvy and modern, and so cool. Catchpole added the Premium Plus package. This includes the panoramic sunroof, 13 speaker audio package, heated seats, keyless go, full widescreen infortainment center, and more goodies. Did we mention how ineffably awesome the exterior is?
We look forward to seeing Catchpole’s longer review after he’s been using the AMG E 53 for awhile. But we’re fairly confident this one is going to earn some well deserved praise. This is Mercedes-AMG at its finest. It is more user-friendly for those not ready to take on a road beast, but still want ample power. It is fuel efficient, which is no small feat considering that sweet inline six can turn it out. The high-tech features are plentiful and user-friendly. And it remains pure E-Class: agile, sporty, luxurious, and sexy.
