Top Gear Reminds Us That the AMG S63 Coupe Is Still King

By -

Though AMG focuses on promoting the sedan version of this beast, let’s not forget that the coupe is the best GT car on sale today.

Whether or not you’re well versed in the world of Mercedes-Benz, when it comes to the AMG S63 name, there’s a good chance you can picture one in your head almost instantly. When you close your eyes and imagine it, it’s probably the largest luxury sedan we’ve all come to know and love through the years. Despite Mercedes-AMG offering the S63 in sedan form, many people tend to forget that there is also a coupe version that exists. Chris Harris gets behind the wheel of the S63 Coupe to help explain why it’s one of the most underrated luxury coupes on sale today.

Having the old 5.5-liter, twin-turbo V8, the S63 Harris has isn’t a 2019 model which now has the updated 4.0-liter, twin-turbo V8 engine under the hood. Despite being a couple of years old, the ride quality hasn’t diminished over time at all. “I don’t know of a car that better combines speed and comfort and I’ve driven every car that’s supposed to do it,” says Harris, host of Top Gear. If that doesn’t say enough, just check out the his facial expressions of amazement and relaxation while behind the wheel.

Attention to Detail Level: Over 9000

Just to be sure you’re reminded that you’re in an AMG S-Class and not in a C-Class, Mercedes have gone above and beyond to pay attention to all details. From afar, the S63 may look like a larger C63, but once you get up close and personal, you’ll see that it’s much more than that. Up front, you’ll find Swarovski crystals inside the headlight assemblies right above the individual LEDs, something you’ll absolutely not find in a C-Class Coupe. Along the side of the S63, there’s one body line that starts from the front wheel and extended all the way to behind the rear wheel. It may not have swollen rear fenders like a 911, but it’s still a nice touch.

Once you take a step inside, the attention the detail gets even more impressive. One of the most impressive features includes the ability to have full access to the passenger seat. That includes the 1.2 million-way adjustability, cooling, as well as heating settings. “If you can’t get comfortable in this car, you can’t get comfortable in any car.” , mentions Harris. The cabin of the S63 Coupe is such a nice place to be and rightly so. The full digital dash screens are intuitive without being too complicated and the center console that opens from both sides is pure wizardry. Lastly, Chris mentions that the Burmester sound system is the best in the business.

So why is the Mercedes-AMG S63 Coupe so good, yet nobody knows about it? Perhaps the secrecy is what makes it so special. What do you think about Merc’s best kept secret? Let us know in the forums.
