Mercedes-AMG One Gets Racy at 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed

The 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed offers us the first glimpse of the Mercedes-AMG One being pushed in the real world.
The Mercedes-AMG One has been teased forever. After years of development and delays it was finally revealed in early June. And at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed, we finally got a peek at what this car will look, and sound like in the real world. Incredible. That would be the one word that could best describe it. Oftentimes you will see a manufacturer, or an auto journalist refer to a car as a racecar for the street. The Mercedes-AMG One is not merely a racecar for the street. It is a Formula One car for the street.
The folks from the Gumbal YouTube channel were at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed. And as it so happens so was the Mercedes-AMG One. There is no interview or in-depth road test of the car. No performance stats or lap times are revealed. However, what we do get is over seven minutes of one of the most anticipated cars in decades being put through its paces. There is no heavy camouflage. There is no marketing speak or perfectly placed glamor shots of the car. What we see here is just raw footage of what the Mercedes-AMG F1 team could come up with in terms of a road car.

Soft Launch
The video begins with the Mercedes-AMG One poised for launch. But the driver is not interested in setting the best 0 to 60 time on this run. The car pulls away rather gently and then continues down the damp course. Eventually the car picks up speed and is pushed harder and harder. From the video it is almost tough to tell how quickly the car is going because it remains so flat through the corners. However, the sound of squealing tires is a hint that it is being pushed pretty hard despite the fact that it doesn’t seem to be breaking a sweat.

Sound
The car uses a hybrid 1.6-liter V6 to power the rear axle. Electric motors drive the front. So, the car is not going to sound like a naturally aspirated V10-powered beast. That being said the little 1.6-liter loves to rev and it certainly sounds sporty. Throughout the course of the video, we are treated to the sounds of the engine running up and down the rev range. If you had your eyes closed as it drove by you could certainly be forgiven if you thought, you were in the stands of a Formula One race.

Active Aero
At around the 3-minute mark of the video the Mercedes-AMG One comes to an unexpected stop on the course. At first, the commentator thinks that there may be a problem with the car. But as it turns out it is all just part of the show. The car squats down on its lowest suspension setting. Then the air vents over the front wheels pop open. At the back the rear spoiler is fully deployed. The car is now in full attack mode and is ready to take on the rest of the course.

Enjoy
The video below shows the Mercedes-AMG One doing its thing at the 2022 Goodwood Festival of Speed. Unless you happen to have one of these on order. Which we suspect you don’t, this is the best chance you have at seeing one up close and taking on a track the way the engineers intended. Enjoy.
