Mercedes vs. Audi vs. Maserati vs. BMW: Who Wins In A Drag Race?

Fifth Gear finds out who rules the strip between this Mercedes, Audi, and Maserati.

Mercedes, Audi, and Maserati are known for building some of the most expensive and luxurious roadsters in the world. But how do they stack up when you put them on a track? BBC’s Fifth Gear took a Mercedes SL63 AMG, a Maserati GranCabrio, and an Audi R8 V10 Spyder and pit them against a BMW M3 — a car that costs half as much as the three sports cars, but has nearly identical specifications.

First up is the Mercedes, which has more horsepower than the M3. Even with a head start, the AMG leaves the BMW in the dust, beating the M3 by over 200 meters.

Next is the Audi R8, a lightweight roadster that has the fastest 0-60 time (3.8 seconds) of the bunch. With a powerful V10 engine behind the seats and a double clutch gear box, it beats the M3 by 1.5 seconds, slightly faster than the Mercedes.

Finally, the Maserati, the heaviest car with the least amount of horsepower in the group. It’s a sexy car from a great brand, but it finishes 10.1 seconds behind the M3. The race was initially close, but in the end the BMW embarrasses the Italian exotic.

When it comes down to it, you really do get what you pay for when it comes to these near-exotic roadsters. The Audi R8 was the lightest car but had the fastest time, leaving the M3 behind at the starting line. You can check out the video of Fifth Gear’s time trials here. But if there’s a moral to this story, it’s this: If you want something sexy, go with the Maserati. Just don’t expect it to win any drag races.
