Mercedes Shows Off Several New Models in Chicago, Bringing Some Much Needed Heat to the Windy City

We were recently fortunate enough to visit the Chicago Auto Show, with special attention paid to the Mercedes-Benz display. It was anything but business as usual for Mercedes-Benz at the 2017 Windy City show. They brought their full lineup, as well as five new models, including two AMG GT variants.

In addition to the standard AMG GT — a stunning car in its own right — Mercedes-AMG also unveiled the limited-edition AMG GT C Edition 50. Limited to 50 units, the AMG GT C was built to commemorate 50 years of AMG.

Finished in a Graphite Gray Mango matte paint, the AMG GT C comes with a 550-HP version of AMG’s 4.0-liter V8, a high-performance exhaust system, wider wheels, and several other special parts and trims that set it apart from “standard” AMG GTs.

Also unveiled was the E-Class Coupe, a two-door version of the new E-Class platform set to arrive later this year as a 2018 model. Sharing the same front end as the E-Class sedan, things get more interesting behind the A-pillar, with slightly-longer doors and a vast expanse of quarter panel broken up by subtle and tasteful character lines. The taillights are par for the course for Mercedes-Benz’s other coupes, but that doesn’t make them any less attractive in this context.

The new 2017 SLC was also present, its long hood/short trunk styling is both familiar and fresh to Mercedes-Benz fans. Slotting nicely into the brand’s current lineup, it might be the prettiest modern SL-Class yet.

It wasn’t all about coupes and convertibles at the show this year, though — the debut of the freshened-up 2018 GLA was a pleasant sight, as well. The existing car’s styling does a great job of evoking images of corner-carving hot hatches and compact SUVs simultaneously. And this mid-cycle refresh is careful not to upset that balance, merely refining what makes it so great in the first place.
