Can This Bizarre SL500 Be Saved?

Questionable Modifications Are in No Short Supply. But Are They Too Much for This Bizarre SL500 to Overcome?

Not everyone has the same taste when it comes to modifying cars. Some like the blacked-out look; some like stance. But we cant think of anyone who would like this.

Found on Craigslist in the Chicago area, this golden 1998 SL500 will take your breath away in the worst way possible. A golden hardtop with stripes sits on top of a black SL, contrasted with more gold. And Gold rims. And a gold engine cover. It’s a lot to look at, but interestingly it’s priced to sell at $2,700, “or best cash offer.”

Hail damage is part of the deal, but can this SL be saved? We think most of the gold infection can be reversed, and at the price, it seems to be worth a shot. Described in the advertisement as a clean car from Texas, the seller claims there is no rust. It also runs and drives, but “needs a tune up.”

For someone with an empty stall in their garage and looking for a cheap project, it might be fun. We’d remove most of the exterior gold. But as a nod to the previous owner’s vision, we think leaving the gold engine cover in place would be the right thing to do.
