Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR: What It’s Like to Buy One

By -

CLK GTR street car is a rare bird, so if someone asks you to help them pick theirs up, you say “yes”.

We infrequently feature YouTube vloggers here on MBWorld, but when they get their paws on an extremely rare Mercedes-Benz CLK GTR, we’ll make an exception. This most recent installment of Seen Through Glass features channel host Sam helping his friend — who he dubs “EA” for the purposes of anonymity — pick up his new-to-him CLK GTR Coupe in Italy. Of the original homologation run, 25 cars were built in the late 1990s: six roadsters and 19 coupes.

This car is ludicrous from start to finish. Deeper into the video you see the new owner installing himself into the driver’s seat, and it’s such an ordeal. Even once the car is on the road, you’ll notice that the back end of the car gets a little squidgy going around a roundabout because this machine does not have the modern traction control or stability control we’re used to in supercars of today.

More than that, throughout the video you can see people gawking at the CLK GTR in traffic. The report from inside the car indicates what you’d expect: the CLK GTR is actually the epitome of “race car for the street”, and drives as such. You can hear the squealing brakes and the straight-cut transmission gears as it drives away. The exhaust is quieter than you’d expect, but Mercedes fitted the car with a pair of large mufflers to make it legal for road use, so that makes sense.

Ultimately we’re mostly viewing the car from the outside as Sam follows behind in his Fiat 124 Spider. That said, this video is worth a watch if you’re a fan of GT1-era homologation specials. Also, this is an attractively shot film for a vlogger.
