Mercedes-Benz G550 4×4²: A Master of Extremes

By -

Huge tires, huge flares and huge ground clearance equal huge price tag.

Someone at Mercedes must have realized the 6×6 might not exactly be the hottest seller in the showroom, what with a price tag in the stratosphere. So they chopped off an axle and the truck bed, and came up with this: the G550 4×4².

With mechanicals more related to the 6×6 than the standard G-wagon, its off-road capabilities are nearly unmatched by anything on the road. Portal axles give it 18 inches of ground clearance. Which, if you’re looking to show off how much that actually is, you can crawl around under the car.

Carbon fiber is everywhere, including the flares that add an additional foot to the width of the 4×4². This has consequences for the way it drives (wind noise!), but interestingly, not in such a negative way. You can’t expect a car like this to have sports-car steering feel or acceleration, but Mercedes still likes their turbo V8 engines. Despite it not being an AMG, it is still somewhat swift.

However, the main impression that Doug DeMuro hits home in the video above is just how high up off the ground you’re sitting. Trucks? You’re looking down on them. Fire trucks? Well, you’re eye to eye with those guys. But since you’re in a Mercedes, you’re surrounded by leather and carbon fiber.
