In just nine years, Mercedes-Benz has produced 500,000 cars in its new Chinese factory. This is both a testament to Mercedes, and a view into the future of the Chinese automotive market.

In the past, the automotive industry has found it particularly hard to work within China. Especially with all the blatant forgeries and stolen patent designs that China neglects to prosecute. Additionally, China is quite a difficult place to sell cars to the public. However, Mercedes has found that investing in the country, and the rising middle class, has become extremely fruitful.

“Going forward, we are determined to pick up the pace even more as we  just signed a billion Euro agreement with our partner for the localization of further compact car models. BBAC (Beijing Benz Automotive Company) is undoubtedly on its path to become the largest Mercedes-Benz passenger car plant worldwide,” said Hubertus Troska, Mercedes’ top exec in China.

China is quickly becoming a region no manufacturer can ignore, and Mercedes seems to be on the front lines leading the way. In addition to cars, the plant also builds both 4 and 6 cylinder engines for the local market. In case you were curious, the 500,000th car was a long-wheelbase C-Class.
