Mercedes Developing AMG Sport Lineup

With the recent success of the entry-level CLA/GLA platform, and a host of buyers who aren’t able to afford full AMGs. Mercedes has cooked up a line of performance cars to help bridge the gap.

Dubbed the AMG Sport range, the new lineup of cars is set to take aim at BMW’s M Performance, and Audi’s S Line cars.

The new lineup will be a set of AMG-tuned cars above the standard Sport packages, making them almost AMG Light models. According to Mercedes, the new brand will be under the AMG flag, but will be a sub-brand for the performance wing.

The sub-brand is set to make its official debut at the Detroit Auto Show this coming January. The company is set to show off two separate models for the public there that will introduce the new line.

The first two cars, according to the spy shots we’ve seen, will be a GLE 450 AMG Sport and a C450 AMG Sport. The C450 will be available in both sedan and wagon formats, and will use a modified 3.0L Twin Turbo V6 making around 360-370 horsepower. While not much is known about the GLE 450’s drivetrain, a similar setup as the C450 is likely.

Tobias Moers, AMG’s Boss, said the sub-brand AMG Sport will help Mercedes garner new market support for those individuals wanting a more sporty car, but without the price tag of a proper AMG.

We’ll get our first look at the new AMG Sport line soon, but in the meantime, what do you think about it? Will it grab more consumers for the Mercedes brand?
