Mercedes Under Fire for Claims of Diesel Engine Defects

Looks like Mercedes-AMG’s plan to steer clear of diesel technology, as we reported here a few days ago, might turn out to be a smarter move than initially expected.

Daimler, the parent company for Mercedes-Benz, has launched an internal investigation into MB’s BlueTEC diesel engines after a class-action lawsuit was filed against the carmaker. The suit claims that the engines are emitting more nitrogen oxygen than advertised in promos for vehicles equipped with the engines.

The suit also asserts that the BlueTEC diesels’ nitrogen oxide reduction system deactivates when the outside temperature drops below 50-degrees Fahrenheit. This can make the engine capable of producing pollutants up to 65 times higher than the federal limit, according to an Auto Week report.

Some of the models named in the suit include the ML-Class, GL-Class, E-Class, S-Class, R-Class, GLE-Class, and Sprinter. Here’s hoping that Mercedes-Benz gets this thing sorted out before it turns into another Volkswagen fiasco.
