With the arrival of the new Bentley Bentayga, Mercedes is once again eyeing the possibility of building an uber luxurious SUV. The Bentley just went on sale, and although the car hasn’t even started production, it’s already almost sold out, with the Queen of England actually being the first person to buy the car. Given that type of demand, Mercedes U.S. Head of Sales, Steve Cannon, told LeftLaneNews that, “There’s an appetite, a market for that.” He basically said that a Mercedes Maybach SUV is a definite possibility.

The previous rumors stated that Mercedes was working on a Maybach branded SUV, and would use the GL platform. Cannon went further and stated, “When we get to that point that we expand the Maybach offering, and we will expand the Maybach offering, that would be a natural place to go.”

It therefore seems that not only is the Maybach SUV a perfect platform for Mercedes, but that it’s almost a definite at this point. The current GL is set to be replaced later next year with the new GLS, and working within that time frame, a likely GLS Maybach could be seen sometime after that launch.

What do you all think, is a Maybach branded SUV the way to go, or will it follow in the steps of the previous Maybach and fail miserably?
