Mighty ’63’ AMG Engine Is Back… But For How Long?

AMG 63

Supply chain woes meant production of the 4.0 turbo V8 from Affalterbach was on hold, but the AMG 63 is coming back for 2023.

If the AMG lineup seemed a little wheezy lately, it’s because there’s there’s been a specific shortage of wonderful bassy and rumbly tones. That’s right, V8’s haven’t really been around this year. About one year ago, CNET reported that Mercedes would cease V8 models because of supply chain issue. I’s a believable conundrum, as most of the automotive industry has been plagued by supply shortages in one way or another. But for enthusiasts, specifically AMG fanatics, this year has been full of frustration. But worry not, because according to Jalopnik, the V8 motors are making a comeback. In a big way. Yup, the 4.0 turbo V8 is back, and so is the legendary “63” moniker.

Jalopnik’s report says Mercedes never even made a press release. Instewad, a website update is showing that AMG models ranging from the SL coupe all the way to the G-Wagen are back in business. Eleven models in total are back, and range from the $81,850 C 63 S AMG Coupe to the AMG GT 63 S 4-door Coupe at $170,350. Additionally, there’s the E63 S in the from of a sedan and wagon (yes!), with the SUV’s being represented by the GLE 63 S and S Coupe, GLS 63, and G63. And they didn’t forget about their flagship either, with an SL 63 AMG thrown in for good measure.

Mighty '63' AMG Engine Is Back... But For How Long?

While we do embrace the return of this engine, we have to wonder for how long it’s actually going to stick around. As we have seen from our friends at electric vehicle forums, Mercedes is hell bent on producing electric vehicles including the EQS AMG. But interestingly, the GT 73 AMG is nowhere to be seen yet. We can only guess that supply chain issues put a quick halt to that project, too.

We know at minimum the engines are going to be getting smaller and smaller with fewer and fewer cylinders, but at some point the V8 will be a thing of the past. Thankfully there are no laws preventing you from owning an older V8 AMG. For now.
