New Mercedes GLE Coupe Tested

“The Mercedes X6,” as some might say, but don’t let a similar roof-line have you thinking this is just a copy from another German make. Instead, the new Mercedes GLE “coupe” has what we will see on the new GLE (nee ML), including the first phase of the rollout of the AMG Sport Line moniker.

Where the X5 and X6 differentiate is mostly down to the roof-line, while most other things remain similar. But as you can see in Carbuyer‘s review below, for the GLE, the coupe sees a much heavier re-styling of the far rear sheet metal. It not only looks far different from the standard hatch, bringing a bit of S-class coupe styling cues, but also formed so as not to lose head room, and keep cargo volume at a max by being a bit longer in measure than what you’d see inside the standard SUV’s hatch.

For most GLE coupes, under the hood will contain the 3.0 turbo as designated by the numerals 450, or the stupendously quick AMG version, GLE63, which shares the turbo V8 unit found in other cars currently in the AMG lineup. The fact still remains that this type of styling will remain polarizing. Being all things to all people might broaden appeal for some cars, but it will be interesting to see how it fares for the GLE coupe.
