This custom-built SL might raise a few eyebrows — and a few thousand dollars for the seller.

When it was released, the R107 SL-Class was perfectly poised to capitalize on the excesses of the 1970s and 1980s. To many, it represents the ideal personal luxury automobile. Its exceptionally long life, from 1972 to 1989, is a testament to the platform’s excellence.

If your idea of personal luxury calls for a bit more utility than most, this 1979 450SL currently offered on BringaTrailer may be the perfect car for you. This car was painstakingly built over two and a half years by the seller. The bodywork was finished off with new glass, a fresh repaint, and modern power seats. A custom fuel tank was made for the project, allowing for a flat-load floor.

Some of the changes — such as the Euro headlights and the Nardi Classic steering wheel — are ideal for R107 fans. But some of the finish details — like the 18″ wheels, monochromatic trim, and fog lights — seem anachronistic at best, and downright questionable at worst.

However, the quality of the workmanship appears to be top notch. And if you’re in the market for a classic Mercedes-Benz shooting brake, this R107 is simply one of a kind. According to the listing, the builder has decades of experience with bodywork, and it certainly shows.

Love it or hate it, this was a remarkably well-executed conversion, with no corners apparently cut in finish, glass, or trim. A custom headliner was made for the project, and interior seams were finished and painted. The result is a finish that’s as close to factory as possible.

We’re usually against the idea of buying someone else’s project. But this looks like the kind of finished project that a lucky new owner can hop in, drive away, and start enjoying right away.
