621 hp. That’s the kind of power lurking underneath the sculpted hood and sheet metal of Mercedes’ SL 65 AMG convertible cruise missile. The coupe made it’s official debut at the New York Auto Show earlier this week with that big, beautiful 6L V12 as it’s centerpiece.

No doubt, the car is a fitting celebration of AMG’s 45 years as of tuning. Even more impressive than the horsepower rating is the amount of torque it produces. In typical AMG style, the SL 65 boasts a staggering 728 ft-lbs of torque from about 2300 to 4300 rpm. That means that moving from cruising speed to warp 10 is easy in any gear.
No new Mercedes would be complete without a host of new technology. Vision control pipes windshield washer fluid through the wipers. Sky control is a little bit more interesting. It (magically) allows the glass roof of the SL to alternate between being transparent and opaque. Nico Rosberg shows it off in this video.

If the outgoing SL AMG is anything to go by, this model will likely cost in the vicinity of $200,000. That cost puts it in the range of some seriously entertaining super cars, but in truth, there’s nothing else quite like the SL 65 right now. It’s easily the most feature packed, luxurious, and powerful roadster on the road today. Calling it a sports car just does not do it justice.
What do you guys think of the big bad Merc? Sound off in the forums!
