Mercedes SLR McLaren 722 S Roadster is a Modern Collectible

Mercedes-McLaren’s Roadster still stands as one of the fastest open top cars ever made. This one is going for $1,500,000.

Thunderous exhaust marks the arrival of a Mercedes McLaren 722, and for sure, this car appeals to a very specific person. But if a coupe just wasn’t for you, you could always opt for the open top roadster. And if that wasn’t enough, you could get the 722 edition. More power and more madness were available for the consumer who needed it. However, that was almost a decade ago. But even by today’s standards…

If this kind of car is still what you see yourself in, you’re in luck. The Mercedes Benz Museum in Stuttgart has a branch called All Time Stars. This Mercedes-Benz Classic company helps to find a new home for some of the brands most historic and important cars. As such, it’s no surprise that examples like this SLR 722 S can fetch an expected $1,500,000 USD.

Taking the upgrades from the 722 coupe, the roadster places not only 641 horsepower under the hood, but also borrows the upgraded suspension and brakes from the coupe as well. And unlike it’s successor, the cabrio still keeps the wild upward opening doors from the coupe.

That makes it one of very few modern Mercedes models that have avoided the fate of depreciation. Other models that have escaped the clutches of diminishing value include the AMG SLS, and the Black Series cars. Still, even those were made in far greater numbers than the 722 S roadster, as just 150 of them were ever made. Less than 30 ended up here in the US.

While we now have the Mercedes AMG GT roadster as a replacement for the SLR and SLS roadsters, part of us misses the sheer madness of stuffing a giant powerful motor in a roadster. However, the AMG GT’s competence may lend it to being an appreciating asset as well.
