Three Pillarless Mercedes-Benz Coupes For Summer Driving

By -

E320, 560SEC, S600: Mercedes made some wonderful cruising coupes. Which would you pick?

This just might be our favorite segment of Mercedes history. The large-and-in-charge pillarless coupe is the one segment where Mercedes is the definitive victor every single time. These three cars, built across a decade, show some of the best examples of the concept we’ve ever seen.

Thanks to Mercedes Source, we’re given the rare opportunity to walk around all three cars and compare them directly side-by-side. So the important question here is which one would you most like to take home if you could only have one of the three?

The E320 is the lightest and most nimble of the three, but also has the least power with just 3.2 liters of inline-six power. The 560SEC is perhaps the most iconic of the three with the traditional big coupe feel to it, and a big 5.6-liter V8 poke up front to help carry this big beast up to speed.

The S600 coupe is the fastest and most powerful of the three with a giant-yet-smooth V12 under that long sloping hood. None of these three are particularly sporty to drive, as they’re built more for an arm-out-the-window coastal drive than a tire-burning run through your favorite driving roads. If you keep in mind what these cars are for, however, you’re sure to have plenty of fun behind the wheel.

You can’t really go wrong in picking any of these three, but which is the one you’d most want? We’re awful partial to the classically beautiful lines of the 560SEC, what with its chrome grille and old-world Merc sensibilities. drop all four windows on a sunny day and you’ll be happy with your choice, no matter what.
