YouTuber gives 2019 Mercedes-AMG E53 Coupe 10K-mile Review

By -

Carfection host Henry Catchpole spent nine months with this Mercedes and determined it was a ‘wonderful thing to live with.’

In the world of automotive journalism, it seems that car reviews are always done in the extreme short-term. However, purchasing and owning a car is very much so a long-term commitment. Thus, there is a bit of a disconnect when it comes to these two things. The reviews are supposed to give us a better look at what the car is about, however, rarely do they let us know what they are like to live with.

Host Henry Catchpole and the rest of the team at Carfection have made an effort to change that. This review features the new E53 AMG Coupe. This stunning looking vehicle is one that might be on a lot of people’s lists. This is the type of car that an enthusiast would love to daily. Not everybody needs or can afford an AMG GT-R to “survive” driving to work and back. Thus, Catchpole gives us his opinion of the car after having it for the past nine months. During that time period, he has driven the vehicle just about 10,000 miles. Let’s see what he has to say about the car after driving it day after day, month after month.

Even though cars might look stunning from the outside, you spend 99 percent of the time inside of them. Thus, Catchpole starts by giving his thoughts about the cabin. In regards to the infotainment system, he states that he enjoys the large dual screens and the fact they aren’t touch screen. That way, there isn’t fingermarks everywhere across the dash. The center control knob and steering wheel controls are intuitive enough that you don’t feel the need for touch screens.

While Catchpole likes the instrument cluster setup and configurations, he doesn’t like the weight of coupe doors. He believes they are a bit to heavy and have given him trouble in a couple of situations. This situation can be remedied by having “big strong arms,” coyly put by the Carfection host. As far as audio is concerned, the Burmester speaker package does not only look stunning, but also sounds great. Over the course of using the active cruise control, Catchpole has had some issues with the speed-adjustment feature when it detects speed limit signs. The car would dramatically slow down on the freeway even when the speed limit sign was not for the area or freeway he was on.

The multi-beam LED headlights were without a doubt one of Catchpole’s favorite features. He stated that the technology was very intelligent in the way it functions, but still requires some driver care. On the subject of lighting, the LED lights within the air vents change blue when cooling or red when heating. Although this is a minor detail, it is something that Catchpole said “made him smile”.

In regard to the “Mercedes me” app, he has also found use of vehicle lock reminders in case he forgot to lock the car or finding where he parked the car in a unfamiliar area. In summary, Catchpole concludes that the E53 AMG Coupe has been a “wonderful thing to live with” and it is an “all-rounder.” Those looking for the raw, untamed sporty feel of a C63 AMG will be disappointed. However, those that want a dash of sporty with a stunning powertrain, beautiful styling, and comfortable ride might be looking at their new first choice.
