The hood latch attaches to a cable the runs along the left side of the fender, under the radiator support and to the latch mechanism. Take a flashlight and have a look near the center strip of the grill. If you have long pliers, you might be able to get to the cable. If you are unable to reach the cable to pop the latch, you'll have to break out some of the plastic "egg crating" of the grill insert (don't fret, the plastic insert is pretty cheap) to gain access to the latch.

Have a look at this link:

If the cable is still attached to the mechanism that releases the hood! You can un screw the hood release lever located in the car and just pull the cable. You can also hold the cable housing from the same area and pull cable only. This has happened to me also.

I have experienced the same. I am guessing that the cable is stretched and in need of replacement. I have the new one and want to know if anyone will share their experience with replacing it. I notice that the cable runs along the drivers fender inner wall through a multiple grommet and then disappears under the fuse box presumably to the firewall into the drivers compartment. I have read in the Haynes Manual that you can tie a string to the cable and pull it through. Any experience out there? By the way I bought the cable in Canada at Mercedes for $40. I was able to open my hood by removing the release handle and pulling on the cable...so it is not broken but probably stretched...a god time to replace it.
