190E 2.3 Project possibility?

My father-in-law bought a very used 190E 2.3 in an auction a few months ago. He's fixed a few things, but the tranny seems to be no good (already found a few candidates for under $500, and I've done tranny work before so I might do the labor myself). I haven't been around the car much and so I don't know a lot about it, just that it's somewhere in the 84-86 range. 16v? How can I check. Also, what's the HP, TQ, 0-60mph, and 1/4 stats on this car... stand-alone weight? After-Market support???

The reason I post about it is because the father-in-law wants to build a room addition to his house and the car is in the way. He'll let it go for $800 although I'm sure he's yanking my chain. If I can talk him down, is it at all worth it to restore this beauty? I've seen it about 3 times and I just feel that it is a very classy benz and much to my liking.

It needs some minor body work and possibly a paint job, but one of my closest friends customizes show-caliber cars for a living and he'll do the work for only the cost of materials, a bbq, and a few beers

Other than the tranny, the horn doesn't seem to work (fuse blows every time the horn is activated), and the turn signals don't light up also (checked fuses, blow as well, bulbs are ok... maybe connected to horn problem?)

I've restored a few cars from a very trashed position, but they've all been japanese... So what am I looking at as far as extra costs go, adding onto the $500-$800 to buy the car, the $500 tranny, and possibly a $400-$600 nicely done cosmetic job?

To me it's a beautiful car, and if I had the cash I'd do anything it takes, but I am on a limited budget.

It does actually run, by the way

did some homework over the last few mins... i guess it's a 8V because id doesn't have the 2.3 16 emblem... just the 2.3

also, this model has controls on the doors that adjust the seats.

The turn signals dont light up or they dont work at all? If they dont work, the hazard switch is most likely the problem. Sometimes it freezes up or the wiring might have came loose, but if you "play" with the switch you can get it to work.

If a fuse keeps blowing everytime you honk the horn, then its either bad wiring or it could be the relay. I would check the wiring that goes to the horn first.

And btw, a better way to tell if its a 16V is by looking at the engine. It says 2.3-16V on the block. Or the car should have a 16V body kit.

i just got back from over there and i didn't get a chance to look at the engine. I did take apart the steering wheel/horn assembly to find out that there was a screw jammed in between the contacts. This might have caused a wire to melt or go bad somewhere but I can't seem to spot it.

I want to make sure that these little problems are fixable before I commit to buying it.

The turn signals did not used to work until I fixed this horn issue. Now the horn still doesn't work, but the fuses no longer get blown instantly by depressing the horn. The turn signals do light up now for a while, and then the fuse blows. If I recall correctly, both the horn and turn signal lamps use the same fuse (also for climate control), so it's getting difficult to determine what's going on. For this issue, I might just bring over one of my electrician friends and see what he says.

Is there any site where I can find a guide to the various years, models, and changes from year-to-year with the 190E?

That is a pretty good website dedicated to the 190E. There are a couple of threads that have links to the factory service manuals online.

Good luck.
