Best fit tyres on 17"x8" alloys (BZ-03)
Hope you guys can help PLEASE. My 18 yo son Adam, bought his first car a couple of weeks ago. He fell in love with these 17"x8" rims that the dealer had put on the 1989 190E (he also "threw-in" the 6"x 15" factory alloys).
Problem : the tyres rub on the guards! (especially the left rear. The existing tyres are:Front: 215x45x17 Faulkens; Rear 235x45x17 Yokohamas.
I got a feeling the rims are too big at 8" wide (they are called BZ-03). I measured the F & R tracks and they are 20mm under the legal max limits. Some people say to just roll the lip on the guards but I've heard that the paint can crack - the car is in mint condition for age.
Any suggestions on tyres / rims? would 17x40x225 series tyres be better or are the rims just too big (might have to put 'em on my W126!).
Thanks for any help.

Hi, John.
I can't remember the thread (or if it was here or benzworld) but the consensus was that you couldn't go past 6.5" or 7" rim width on the 190E. Lots of folks roll the lips, but like you I'd be concerned with the paint. However, I think I'd do that before putting on smaller tires. Negatives about pressing smaller tires on there include cutting your ground clearance, messing with the speedometer accuracy and making the car look funny (like the tires don't fill the wheel openings). And you'd also be adding to ride harshness in cutting down the sidewall.
I don't know the design but I bet they'd look great on your 126.
Take care and enjoy the ride -- both of you!

If your son plan on keeping the wheels the car.The best thing to do is roll the fenders. If it still rub and he want to keep the rims then he would need smaller tires.Check the link below.BTW the the max w/o any problems is 7.5 with about a 35offset.

190E (W201) Best fit tyres on 17"x8" alloys (BZ-03)
THANK YOU people for all your help - I was going to post some pictures of my son's 190 but I'm not having much luck.
I think we'll be trying the 215x40x17 tyres as long as the load ratings are OK.
John.
