2003 Mazda Protege/1987 190E
new owner of a 190e

i just recently aquired my uncles benz due to him transfering jobs to japan. he sold me the car for $500 and said it would make a great daily driver.it has 98,765 miles on it. the car is black with black leather interior. the car is a 4 cylinder 5 speed, its pretty clean and is in somewhat good condition for its age. there are a couple of questions i have for you about the car though. one im new to the european car scene, ive been working with mazdas and toyotas for what seems like forever. what are the common problems you see with these cars? what tends to give out (i.e trannies)? where can i find specs on my specific car? what is the performance potential of the car? i know the car would make a perfect a-b car but ive never been able to just leave any car ive owned alone. i currently have a 90 miata im running in the $2006 GRM challenge(ran last year aswell), but i was thinking maybe the 190 would make an interesting car towork with and something very unique. i dont really expect much in power but from what ive seen driving it it seems to handle pretty well and looks nice as hell so thats 2/3 of what i need to compete. i plan to run the car at local SCCA solo2 events to really get a feel for it, but i wanted to come on here and ask ppl with much more experiance than me what they think.

thanks

130bhp? really? hmm seems more lively than that. so these 2.3l motors dont really pack any kinda punch. what is the potential tuning wise? does the motor take well to F/I. how capable are the internals? yatta yatta realy just anything you can tell me the potetial in the car will help. i wouldlove to use the car for a GRM/auto X car but if its pointless then i guess illjust sell it.

Crazy Canadian offers aside, what were you expecting from a Mercedes sedan built in the 80's?

The strong suit of the car is that it can run at triple digit speeds all the live long day and the suspension will allow you cut and carve turns like an honest to goodness sport coupe. If you want aircraft carrier style launch from a stoplight, get a Camaro IROC and a mullet haircut.

Depending on the condition of the internals, the M102 is suitable for turbocharging, nitrous oxide and all the other fast and furious modifications, for a price. Installations are pretty much DIY as kits by Mosselman will set you back about 12-15x your purchase price.

ha i have no problem with the stock power personally, but for it to compete as a GRM car 130 wont cut it. if i do decide to keep the car it will most likely be turbocharged by myself. i would want to keep the spirit of the car so it wouldnt be huge power #'s, something modest keeping a nice power band. sorry to sound like a movie cliche, but i am far from it. building cars is a passion of mine and a hobby ive grew up with since i was a child.i think that this car would be a interesting venture into another realm of cars and would really stand out as something unique. so you say the internals can withhold same amounts of boost? i have a 14b, old super 60 t3 and a ball bearing gt25 off a protege. i think i will playaround with something like these to keep the power instant allow more throttle control. what do you think would be the best idea? what would you do if it were you building the car? i want the opinion of a person that has been in the community a while like yourself. what problems might i encounter?

I drive a 1991 190e 2.3 and I also own a 2001 ML320
If you do regular oil changes and tune ups your car will last a long time. Mine is at 205000 miles and the only problems I've had with it are the window switches have gone out and the air con needed to be refilled. I'm a mechanic so I do all the work my self but like I said I haven't had any problems with it. If you decide to sell it let me know I like the 201 chasis.

i picked up a 190e sportline and eventhough this is mbworld, you'll find lots and lots (and lots and lots and lots and lots) of info at 190revolution.net where all 190 freaks hangs out (like MTI.. :P)

from what i've read, the 190's run forever until:
1: a tractor trailor plows into it
or
2: you live in NJ and your name is dbenz
