Question New speaker installation?

The original speakers in my 1992 190E are way past the end of their useful life, and I'd like to upgrade them all to something modern. I have not been able to find any info on this. Does anyone know if doing this is particularly difficult? I'm not even sure where all the speakers are located, or what size they are, for that matter.

Any information would be greatly appreciated

Thanks,
Brian

I have an 85, I only have 2 5 1/4 inch in the rear deck and I think there are 2 4 inchers in the front dash. Do you have a stock head unit?

If you just want to replace the 4 stock speakers go with a good brand, MB Quart are AWESOME, they are German and they are great!! I have them in my M3 and I love them.

Other than Quarts, look into Boston Acoustic, Rockford's, just get a good brand, I am not big on Kenwood, Alpine, Sony.

Also, if you have a stock head unit swap it out, it will make a huge sound difference, I like eclipse, I have that in the M3 too, but in the Benz I just put a JVC, $90 from best buy and it made a big difference.

I have Kenwood speakers in the benz, they were installed around 6 years ago and it didn't matter at the time what I had put in but I want to swap them for Quarts at some point.

The dash speakers can handle up to a 4" coaxial driver with some pressure fitting. I have Infinity units in the dash. To remove the speaker grills at the corners of the dash, it helps to have a flat ratcheting driver with a phillips bit to get the screws out.

The rear deck can handle up to a 6.5" size round speaker, typically tri-axials with just a razor knife to enlarge the exisiting opening in the rear deck and removal of the plastic basket for the speakers. The 6.5" speaker will be a "surface mount" meaning that the speakers and grills will be above the rear deck, not below, but it's still a clean install. Just be sure to measure and test fit the grills, since the 6.5" grill covers will get pretty close to the rear window.

Some have installed 6 x 9 rears, but some minor metal cutting to clear the magnets is needed. If you're replacing the head unit, consider running all new speaker wires and bypassing the problematic fader switch on the center console.
