r16 tires

my brother is offering to give me his size 16" rim and tires. My 190e (1989)
uses size 15", will this work? if not, why and can my 190e be modified to fit size 16? I'm new to this, so I apologize if my questions sound silly. Appreciate any response.

The first issue is "fit" and then "rolling diameter."

Fit would require that the rims you're getting are "hub centric" to fit Mercedes. The wheel center bore (hub) is part of the mounting system, along with the bolts. Therefore, the hub has to be the proper size and the bolt pattern (5 x 112mm) match the Mercedes wheel hub. The other aspect of the fit is the width of the rim and the wheel offset (ET).

Finally, if the wheel and tire combo that your getting is larger or smaller than the OEM setup, then your speedometer will be incorrect, either faster or slower than actual because of the rolling diameter change.

Thanks for your response MTI. You're right. The rim wheel hub does not
match my Mercedes wheel hub. The bolts seems to match though. The
rim originally belongs to a BMW that's probably why it did not fit right. The
tire guy person said the tires will fit but I just need to get the rim that's made
to made my 190E. Do you have any recommendation?
