190e 2.3L - Can anyone share some insight on this particuliar motor?

Hello everyone:

Aside from the obvious benefits of slightly lower fuel comsumption and having to purchase two less spark plugs/wires during tune-ups, can some share whatever insight they might have on this particuliar motor?

A few months ago when I was first shopping around for my first, four family friends who happen to be MB mechanics up and down California all were advising me to find the 2.3L version.

One said it's a gold mine if you can find one that's been well taken cared of.

Another said it's simply one of MB best efforts and practically bulletproof if not abused and neglected.

While I had a MB mechanic state that the 2.3L was the basis on which so much research was put into this motor due to the racing efforts and which eventually evolved into the 16V, and so on.

I'm less interested in one person trying to discredit another person's opinion, but more interested in what everyone has to share on this topic, whether it be from experience or word of mouth.

I've owned both the 2.6 and the 2.3L, and though I did give up the torque my inline six offered, the 2.3L just seemed like more fun to drive. But then again it might just be the 5-speed.

Thanks for all your time.
