w201 190E 18i cold start prob
hi can any1 pls help,
i bought an 190E 18i in march this year with a head problem, i fixed the head n i've got the car running. the prob is wen im starting from cold it can take up tp 5mins to start, but wen it start's it'll behave untill the next time i got to start it from cold.
some of me m8s say that the e.c.u cud be the cause ov the prob, i dont have the kit that can interigate the e.c.u n clear the error codes, i've got the car to idle between 900/1000 rpm but i know this is wrong because it shud idle between 700/800 rpm.
can any1 help pls?

I have a 1993 1.8 and had a similar cold start problem early on this year. After checking everything visually - including such things as the over-voltage protection relay (well hidden in a compartment behind the battery) and the cold-start sensor, I eventually had no choice but to start replacing components. Even though the old ones looked fine, a chnge of spark plugs, high-tension leads and distributor cap made all the difference.
The car went from taking so long churning over on the starter that it would flatten the battery, to firing up on the first turn.
Before throwing the old ignition components away, I examined them and found out that both the leads and the plugs were both of the resistive / suppressed variety. As far as I am aware, you should either use suppressed-resistive spark plugs in combination with plain copper-cored plug leads, or suppressed-resistive plug leads in combination with plain spark plugs. It seems that the double dose of resistive suppression was enoguh to cut the spark down to almost useless once a bit of ageing had set in as well. I'd suggest it is worth spending a few minutes checking.
Moral of this story: look for the cheap and simple solution first !
