84 190E engine swap
hey i have a 1984 190E and the transmission went so when i replace the tranny im going to replace the engine since it has close to 200k on it...has anyone tried to put the 16-v 190E engine in a regular 190E? does it fit right in and is it carburated? Also, would it bolt right up with a regular 190E standard transmission? thanks in advance

hi,
I converted my 2 litre to a 2.5-16v engine. I think to be safe you should get the whole front half of the car that will have the engine, wiring, trans, brakes etc etc. IT's a more a plug and play job than to really need change anything. Make sure you get a good mechanic tho because I had a lot of trouble because my mech was bad.

Obviously, the M102 twincam engine will "fit" but there are some other considerations. You will need the wiring harness for the 16v or have one adapated, along with the ECU and all ignition and sensor wiring. The exhaust headers are different.
The twincam uses a different radiator to accomodate the oil cooler sidecar. The twincam also uses dual fuel pumps which the non-twincam pre-86 cars did not.
The automatic transmissions will bolt up, but you may have to change the torque convertor and adjust the modulator valve to work well with the twincam. If you switch to a manual gearbox, then you will need to replace the driveshaft, which is a different length, and add the necessary clutch hydraulics and pedals.
You may want to update the instrument cluster, but not requred. Likewise, with the added HP, consider braking improvements.

excellent...you guys have been a huge help already...will i need any new computers for the car or any piggybacking systems or anything like that or will it work fine with the old computer that is in there?

The 16v engines uses CIS injection as a standard item. That's mechanical fuel injection. Therefore as far as I know there is not a need to use any computer system to tune up the car. It's mostly mechanical. But as mentioned before you just have to get the whole front clip of the car (engine, electricals, trans etc) also find out if the 16v uses two fuel pumps. I read somewhere recently that they do and now I have to find out myself because when I did the conversion I didn't know about that. I am using the standard fuel pump and when I accelerate hard (meaning trying to go as fast as I can) it jerks alot when at high rev. That could mean that my injection needs a service or something But otherwise I love the performance!!! GREAT ENGINE!!
