190 2.3-16 problem

HI,

A friend of mine has a problem with his 2.3-16...... The car has a poor performance at high RPM (full throttle). Does not work clean and a black smoke comes out of the exaust when throttle is applied.

I would be very greatfull if you can give any idea what the problem might be!

Thanks in advance!!!

There are any number of sensors which can fail and send the ecu into failsafe mode (full rich), which would explain the poor performance and black smoke.

Check the O2 sensor, Engine temp sensors, OVP relay, and throttle micro switches. Those are pretty common failures.

FWIW, this is becoming a more and more common problem with these cars, and it's a royal pain to track down since so many failures might cause the same problem. Does your buddies car also have idle problems? That's also pretty common and often caused by the same issues.

If everything checks out OK, have a mechanic put an exhaust gas analyzer on the car. It's always possible that the mixture needs to be adjusted.... especially if somebody tried to tune the car up themselves and messed with the eha.
