93 190E - 4th Gear disengages

runs like a top. Trans fluid clean and at the correct level. shifts as normal, but once it gets to 4th gear, it disengages and the engine free revs. I am forced to shift manually into 3rd gear and then it will pull fine (but rpm's too high for freeway). If i come to a stop i can put it back in drive and it will run through the gears again, but once i get to 4th the same thing happens.

I have had it on a hoist and have gone over every inch looking for vac leaks etc. everything is in order.

any thoughts or precedent??

thank you!

No 4th can be valve body or K2 drum, internal leak. Not a DIY job.

Have the throttle cable, especially the adjustment at the engine side, near the microswitch, inspected. It may have slipped or been fiddled with.
