190e limp mode?
Hello,
I have an old 190e (1991) that has worked pretty much flawlessly for the past few years of ownership but, without warning one very rainy day recently, won't shift out of second. It appears that second and reverse work correctly. The engine will freewheel after about 4k RPM's, but shifting back to neutral and then into drive will re-engage into second.
It sounds like, from reading other posts, that this is limp mode. However, I don't even know if the 190's this early had a limp mode. Can anyone chime in on this?
Thanks.

"Limp home mode" refers to the static position that the Bosch CIS fuel injection defaults to if there is a fault with the sensors or ECU. Being mostly mechanical fuel injection, when there is a fault in the system, the fuel system defaults to running very rich and underpowered, but will still operate.

Engine Limp Mode vs. Transmission Limp Mode
Thanks for your reply!
It sounds like you are talking about Engine Limp Mode, which I have heard is separate from transmission limp mode? What makes you conclude that it is a vacuum problem, and where should I start, or lead my mechanic to start?
Thanks again..

Never heard of a Mercedes 722.4 transmission "limp home" mode.
The usual culprits are low trans fluid, clogged filter, worn vacuum modulator, maladjusted Bowden cable, maladjusted throttle cable or leaks in the vacuum lines.
