16 Valve Lap Timer Bleeding

Why do the VDO lap timer gauges in 16Vs bleed and what, if anything, can be done to prevent and/or fix this?

Mine is an original owner, hi-mileage, cream puff, daily driver 16V. I just purchased what is my third VDO lap timer. The original one bled, as did a replacement. I wonder if bleeding of these is inevitable and unfixable. If that is the case, perhaps I should only install the perfect one for show. Or maybe they bleed due to lack of use? I wonder why the dash temperature gauge, which is always on and is also LCD, does not bleed?

Any comments from someone who actually understands these mechanisms and knows what they are talking about (unlike me) would be most appreciated.

If you still have a good working one.. Lock it up in a safe.
