Transmission problem (abrupt shift)

The automatic transmission does not engage in to reverse smoothly. It shifts in to revers very abruptly, giving the sensation that the clutch was let out fast. Other wise the forward gears seem to engage smoothly, however I am not entirely satisfied with the shift points (gears 1-4). I would prefer if the car would hold each gear a little longer before shifting up. I find the car shifts a bit early and there for lacks power. your thoughts and ideas would be appreciated.

Thank you,

1) When was the transmission filter and fluid last replaced?

2) What is the transmission fluid level (measured with engine running)?

Thanks for the reply. not sure when the trans fluid was replaced, but it does look fresh and clean. fluid level seems correct at idle.
some have suggested the bowden cable? what is it and how to adjust it?
