Compressor seized, switch to R134a or keep R12?

Well, the original compressor on my '93 190E 2.3 seized yesterday, so I'll either have to buy a new car or replace the compressor, drier, vacuum the system and refill with R12.
Before I buy a new compressor and drier, has anyone replaced a 190E 2.3 compressor lately? Any problems, and/or have you switched over to R134a?

Thanks in advance,

Dave

don't know if they are the same as 85, but its easy to replace my comp. but i do have a lift and ir tools. you might have to remove the power steering pump out of the way tho, 2 bolts
and if it was me, id switch to r134.

There is nothing to the conversion. Just evac, install fittings and charge with appropriate amount of R134 oil.

The price of R-12 goes up exponentially so one would have to be a fool to keep using it. Now that your compressor has committed suicide, it's the perfect time to make the switch. Your wallet will thank you for it!

I would recommend replacing with R12. The condensor is small in the 190E. You will only be able to put about of 80% of the weight of 134a in the unit because 134a occupies more volume than R12. With less coolant your A/C will not cool as well as it was originally designed to cool with R12.
R12 cost a little more but you will be happier on hot days.
