Exclamation 88' 190E surgery

Mayor problems
Hello, I have a 1988 190E 2.3 Mercedes Benz and it stoped working after about a rough year of use.
Now...I have found oil on the cooling system and vise versa.
oh I know! broken gasket or monoblock!
I opened it and I found a broken head gasket and top cover gasket.
I had to replace it but I did not knew how to take the timing chain off.
A friend of mine told me that you need to take out the front "panel" or "front part" of the motor, but some people told me I just had to take the timing chain link off and after replacing the gasket just replace the link as well.
Problem is I don't know if this link really exists because I coudn't find it on this chain.
ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED
if anyone knows something about this please do not hesitate to say it
Thanks in advance
Alexander
