Hello Members

I just recently bought a 88 190e, 2.3 engine & 88k miles. It's in good shape and I already love it.

There are some things that puzzle me though.

Auto Transmission: - IT SHIFTS HARD. I spoke with a MB mechanic and he says this is normal. I spoke with the original owner and she said it only recently started doing this, which is why she dumped it.

AC: It works most times but if it's REALLY hot outside ( I live in Arizona) and the car is even hotter (no garage ) then sometimes it doesn't kick in and just blows hot air.

I thought that there just may be a leak, but as soon the temps get cooler it works and blows freezing cold again.

So far have gotten 25 mpg in mixed driving -hoping I can improve that.

Thanks for all your replies and I'll post pics of it soon...

Before making any judgments on the transmission, make sure it has a clean filter and new fluid (drain the torque converter too) in it to rule out the cheap stuff. A hard shift could indicate that the vacuum modulator either needs adjustment or replacement. If so, you're lucky.

If you're not feeling lucky, then it could mean it's time to service the bands inside the trans and that could mean that your transmission shop guy is going to get around $1K to smoothen out those shifts.

Do get the system leak checked with a fluorecent dye and have them also check the compressor. Those Nippon Denso compressors are notorious for leaking. I would also check the condition of the A/C (Klima) relay located behind the battery area.

Hwy mpg will be higher, but for mixed, that's about right for the 2.3L

Actually, now that I think I got the hand of how to drive it (when and how much to throttle) the mileage has been improving.

It's averaging like 28 now. It must be getting over 32 on the highway.

This is the 2.3 liter version not 1.8

I've also noticed that the hardness of transmission shifts has also to do with how I throttle it. If I throttle up easy and linear it's smoother, not smooth like GM Autos though.
