Question Accelerator pedal play problem

OK, this must be a very easy one for all you guys, but even before I look under the hood, I better ask.

My gas pedal (cable?) seems to be rubbing some place, as it feels pretty stiff. And, the first bit of pushing (I'd say the first 1/4" travel), is just dead. No difference on idle speed during that first 1/4".

It almost feels like there is slack someplace in the linkage (if there is such a thing). Clearly this isn't normal. Any advise? Is it a known, easy to resolve issue?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Lito,

Nice car!

If the accelerator feels stiff, it's probably due to lack of lubricant on the throttle linkage. There are several things going on when you press the accelerator. You'll have to remove the air cleaner and look at it.

Yes, the slack is normal. If you remove the air cleaner, you'll see the design of the throttle mechanism. One day I was doing some work on my 190 and accidentally pulled the throttle cable out of the adjustment socket and when I got inside to move it, there was no play in the accelerator. It was a weird feeling so I looked at the throttle cable and realized what had happened.

Good luck with the car,

Dave

Thanks again Dave. I figured it should be that simply, but better safe than sorry and ask the experts. As soon as the climate goes above 0 ºC, I'll have a look under the cleaner box.
