When my '93 190E is at idle, I occasionally hear a "tic-tock" clock-like sound coming from the glove box area.What might this be?

The sound it's likely the motor driven fan from the air sampler, which is part of the cabin temperature sensor up in the visor area.
When you hear the ticking noise either spin the temp wheel up or down and see if the noise goes away
