16v transplant

I am a total MBZ noob, so give me a break here.....

I have a 1991 190e auto with the 8v motor, and a guy here local has a complete 16v motor for sale... He believes it to be a 2.5.... How much is involved in swapping it over?? The intake, exhaust, and most of the accesories are there, but no wiring harness or brain... Will this motor use the same harness and computer as the 8v??? How about intake tubing and air cleaner??? Next, I have to figure out if it is worth trying to convert to a 5 speed at the same time... Thanks for any advice...

The 16 valve engine uses a different ECU (Electronic Control Unit) and a different wiring harness than the regular 8 valve. Depending on the years of the engines, it may also use a different A/C system (compressor and lines). The 16 valve has an outboard oil cooler, so you'll have to change the radiator to the smaller 16 valve unit if you're going to fit it in the stock position.

Since the 2.5-16 wasn't imported to the US, better check on what engine he has. If it is the 2.5-16, then it will be slightly harder finding all the electrical and wiring for it, not impossible, but it's not going to be lying around in the US.

Thanks... I will check on the size... As I said, I am a MBZ noob.. I can pick up the motor for $150, so if I can't make it work, I won't be out too much...

There will be some other "bits" like the fuel pump relay and other engine specific parts. $150 for a basket case engine isn't a lot, provided that the block isn't cracked or other major defect.

So, I checked back with the guy, and he said it is a 2.3 from a car he had.. When he wrecked the car, he pulled the motor, and "some other parts" with the plan of getting another car to put them in... I am going out to his storage unit this weekend to see what those other parts are.. He says he might have the brain and harness, but he doesn't remember.... He also said something about skirts, so I have my hopes up that he pulled off the body kit too.... I won't count my chickens before they hatch though... Could just be a pile of sun visors and seat belts...
