what does this part do?

The thing circled in red... anyone know what it does or why I might need it?

Im trying to bypass my heat system. I think it is clogged. The system, not the part in red. I can run water thru that part just fine.

It sits the passenger side of the vehicle near the manifold on a 1993 190e 2.6.

Im just not getting proper circulation. My car gets hot, my radiator stays cool. but if I run water thru my top rad hose, it cycles thru the radiator and comes out the other hose.

Yes, I have oil going into my rad thru my (I think, intake gasket) so there is oil/coolant mix all over my engine bay..

Auxillary water pump, powered when the climate control system needs to add more hot coolant to the heater core to raise the cabin temperature.

In the picture, you're missing the hose that connects to the supply side of the heater core valve.

Yeah i know its missing, I took it off to bypass the heater. I went straight from the water pump to the back of the engine where the other heater hose goes from the firewall. I just bypassed all of that, including the thing cirlced in red. But, my engine still gets hot and the radiator stays cool.

edit* I found the clog. Part of it was in my resovior and part of it was the hose going into the rad from the res.
