190E Tech trouble

I picked up an 86 190E 2.3 and i'm having a bit of trouble, the odometer is making a loud clicking noise that's driving me nuts that just started happening tonight. It stops when i depress the button. I think some internal component is out of place or something, any ideas?

Also I was getting blow-by and the first place I took it to said a whole new engine, the 2nd opinion place put a new distributer cap on it and it's working O.K now, but there's still the issue of the blowby and it's easier to start, but still takes more effort than should be needed at times. I'm wondering if that's because of oil gunking the spark plugs or if it really just needs a whole new engine/rebuild.

The 2nd place said that it needed a PCV valve but from what others tell me there isn't a PCV valve in an 86 190E. Anythign else that could be relevant to back pressure or blow-by causing/prevention i should be aware of, that they may be referring to?

Thanks for any help,
Gregory.

Don't worry about blowby. I asked the best MB mechanic in my area about mine and he just shrugged.

Mine did that after I had the cluster out, speedometer cable in the back of the cluster might not be seated in its sprocket correctly. It went away after a while.

its pretty common for the odometers to go out like that. you can take it out and have it repaired, any independent shop should be able to do it for you, dealer will send it out though.

190E 2.6 LS Differential

I have a moderate clacking noise when my transmission downshifts or even sometimes when up shifting. I'm assuming it's a worn shim issue with the differential. Does anyone adjust shimming anymore to correct this? Dealership even? Or is this just a "replace the differential"? I sure would like to get rid of the noise during upshifting or downshifting. The care is almost faultless and I want to keep it for the rest of my life. It's a 1991 190E 2.6L.

.
Welcome to MB World. My parents just gave me their '86 2.3 that was purchased new. It has become my project car that I use as a daily driver and I have been restoring quite a few mechanical items. For tech questions, I would suggest going to benzworld.org or 190revolution.net. The forums over there are more active, especially @ benzworld.

Make sure you dont hit the reset odometer button while the car is in motion. VDOs are known to break if you do that.

It could well be the flex disk(probably the front one)on the drive shaft. Try rotating the drive shaft by hand and if there is play in the movement, it's a worn flex disk: $100 part and 2-3 hrs labor.
