2009 C250 CDI vs 1988 190D
I don't think that this is a fair comparo, but, Mercedes did an interesting experiment for marketing purposes recently.
They took an old 190D, removed its diesel engine and installed the new 204 hp Blue Efficiency engine in its place to see how the old car would perform differently.
Their conclusions are biased towards the new C-Class, a car which has yet to earn its stripes like the old Baby Benz. The idea that Mercedes has never been better than it is today...

They took a new engine and put it into an old car to show the advances of the ENGINE. Why would they not also talk about the other new features?
I want that engine in my 190E.

Turns out it wasn't a 190D, but a 2.6L gasser. That makes sense since there's more room in the engine bay with the revised radiator support. They also had to transplant the steering gear from a Sprinter van to clear the engine.
