1986 190e Timing Chain Problem
Hello after replacement of a 20+ year old head gasket the finding the job went seemingly too easy i get to the point where its time to put back on the camshaft sprocket and timing chain. For some strange reason it appears tha the chain is now shorter and dosen't want to go back on. i have loosened to rail-guide tensioner which didn't really move much more than i was able to move it before I disassembled it. here's my theory the tensioner is in two parts an exterior lock nut with a seal and an internal component with a plunger this component is what I'm wondering if i have to move...Someone please assist in this matter because i have no idea whats wrong...

You probably have the revised chain tensioner which rachets and locks as it goes out to rid chain slack when oil pressure is not available as in startup.
Reason for the revision is because of chain jumping and premature guide wear due to chain slack.
What you have to do remove tensioner. Disassemble tensioner and remove plunger. Replace tensioner outer and place back to block. Insert plunger to the point of no more chain slack. Then replace plunger cover.
Sorry I don't know name of chain tensioner piece parts. Described to best of my knowledge.
