Fuel Problems

Hey Guys,

I'm new here. This is my first post. Anyway, a few weeks ago I ran out of gas in my 1989 190E. This happened because my gas gauge doesn't work. Up until a few weeks ago the light would come on when I was low on fuel and I would just fill it up, no problem. Since I ran out of gas it seems like I can't fill up the tank anymore, either that or it's full and there is another problem. The things that I am going through are stalls at lights, and then it's hard to get going when I restart, after I put as much gas as I can in 5-10 dollars, I have trouble restarting and it stalls for a while at stops after that. I can rev the engine just fine, but when I put it in gear it shuts off. Does anyone have any idea what this could be?

Your 190 has drunk from the bottom of the barrel

It seems that you have picked up the dregs that have probably accumulated in your tank over the last 21 years, like water, dirt, small rust scale - just junk. The main way it got there is the petrol station main tanks. The just sit in the ground for 30 odd years and just collect rubbish. In Australia, we have an unwritten rule that you always fuel up when you got a 1/4 tank left, unless you're a long way between stops. That bad crap has gone through the fuel filter (s) - (replace) all the way up the fuel lines to the fuel divertor (distributor? - the big roundish alloy injection thing that looks like one of the multi armed robots from The Matrix) - everyone calls it something different - this needs to be cleaned out. Then it has found it's way to the injectors. Good luck there. They may be stuffed with fuel tank crud. Clean or replace. And one more thing - fix your fuel gauge man.
