Trip odometer stuck
Just make sure you don't push it while the car is moving.
It is truely a flawed design. It's failure can result in either of two things: The trip odometer fails and stays seperate from the main odometer or
The trip odometer jams the main odometer and they both fail to roll.
Take the mechanism out and inspect it but do not remove the speedometer needle or faceplate. I learned the hard way NOT to remove the faceplate on the w201 models. The speedometer will lose calibration.
Sometimes the metal pin in the center of the gears slides out of its holder, preventing the gears from driving, but it usually happens on the main odometer.
And right on about NOT pushing it while moving...
