'87 Saleen Mustang, '94 Mercury Cougar
Interested in a 190E
Hello everyone. I am new to this forum, so I would like to introduce myself.
I'm 18 years old, and I drive a 1994 Merc. And by Merc, I mean Mercury Cougar. Yeah, don't laugh. I know it's a piece of garbage, and that's why I joined this forum; I need advice on buying my first Mercedes. I also own a 3,400 lb. Paperweight, known as a 1987 Saleen Mustang. For those of you who are not familiar, Saleen was (I guess you can call) a tuning division for Ford's Mustang. Very few were made, and in 1987 only 280 rolled out of Saleen's garage. #172 rests in my garage, all original, with not a speck of rust or chips in the paint. 162k miles in this car looks like 20k.
But to the point:
I am currently interested in buying a 190E. Preferably the 2.3-16v or the 2.6. Just a few weeks ago, I was leaning heavily towards a BMW E30, but once I saw the 190E and read about it, I knew I needed one. From what I hear, the reliability is unmatched by far. Obviously the design and luxury of the car are simply unsurpassed (for a car in that class). Power is adequate for it's size and fuel economy.
I know parts are going to be the wallet-emptier. But again, if these engines are known to easily last 300k miles, then they're probably worth it. You may actually be saving money by buying Benz parts, due to their extended lifetime. This is not a problem, however, because I have plenty of money to spend, and not too much to spend it on.
So, regarding parts, I would like to know which parts on the 190E were the most problematic. Which ones failed the most? I am aware of the water pump/head gasket issue, but I'm sure there are more. I need to be sure of what I am getting into before I absolutely buy a 190E and junk the Cougar. It's a Mercury that belongs on Mercury, far away from humans.
